This past Sunday, my buddy Morgan and I watched the demolition of the Parliament Hotel in downtown Birmingham. We were only a block from the building and had a pretty good view. It was incredible, as the videos below will show, but I didn’t realize the history behind the old hotel, which has been vacant for as long as I can remember and often seemed like a derelict refugee from Vegas or even California. It’s style always seemed out of place, but that may have been due to its Hollywood backers, including Doris Day. Read the whole story here. Here’s the BhamWiki page.
As the charges blew, the building shuddered and then collapsed fairly quickly. Morgan and I headed back to his truck quickly, but were enveloped in dust about 20 seconds after the building went down. As promised, here are the videos:
