Watching the watchers

After some fits and starts, my friend Xaq has launched his ShootBack.tv project. It’s like Witness, but with a narrower focus on police brutality and will serve as a clearinghouse for videos of officers violating the public trust. The principle that ShootBack works from is: It should always be permissible to film a public servant when that person is engaged in their official duties. The aim is to make public officials, such as police officers, respect the rights of arrestees and the public at large through fear of being caught on film if they violate the rights of those they are charged to serve and protect. If we as citizens engage our public servants in this way, hopefully Radley will have fewer things to write about.

Thanks for the love. Radley Balko’s writing was a big inspiration for this.
