I went to the Free the Hops open beer tasting this past Saturday and had the opportunity, along with comrades Kevin, Shaun, Sean and comradette Stefanie, to sample many delicious and/or interesting beers, including Rochefort’s Trappist Ales “6″ and “8″ (8 was better imho), several delicious stouts and porters, including a delicious Polish porter, Zywiec, which was very good and a couple of good imperials whose name escapes me right now. I also had the good fortune to try Sam Adams’ Triple Bock. It definitely falls firmly into the “interesting” category–it had hints of port and soy sauce (no joke), weighs in at a stiff 18% ABV and at $13 a bottle, I don’t see myself stocking up on it anytime soon (not to mention I’d have to drive to another state to purchase some). Still, it’s interesting to peer into the minds of Jim Koch and company—if only they’d send me a bottle of Utopias to review.

One of the other highlights of the tasting was meeting fellow blogger and beer-lover, Dan Roberts, proprietor of the excellent Daily Dixie and an OG in the Alabama Blog Mafia:) (Should any humorless folks be reading, there really isn’t any such thing as a blog mafia; it’s just a funny way to talk about individuals with similar interests.)

In other news, my two-month old Acer desktop has died. Currently, I’m on a laptop, but the desktop issue could start cutting into the regularity of posts (not that they’ve been all that regular in the past, but I’m always trying to do better). I suppose the lesson here is: it’s just not worth trying to save a buck on techmology.

I recommend trying Xingu, a Brazilian Black Beer if you can find it. It’s only 6%, so you may be able to find it in GA.

Xingu is one of my faves, Xaq. I was introduced to it a couple of years ago. It can be acquired in Bama, but few places stock it. It is delicious.

If you think Rochefort 8 was better than the 6 you should try the 10!

When the Hops are finally free here in Bama, 10 will definitely be high on the list.
